Sustainability

Waterfall Retreat was created with a simple principle: that hospitality can exist in balance with its environment while directly supporting the communities around it.

From how we built to how we operate, every element is designed to minimise impact and create long-term, sustainable value for Pemba Island.

How We Built Sustainably

The retreat was constructed using low-impact, locally sourced materials and traditional methods suited to the island’s climate.

Tanga Stone

A durable local material that helps regulate indoor temperatures used in our resturant.

Traditional Roofing

Thatch provides natural insulation, reducing heat gain and supporting passive cooling

Mud Bricks

On-site interlocking mud bricks made from local soil using our own machine reduce transport and cement use while naturally keeping rooms cool.

Self Sustainability

Waterfall Retreat forms part of a broader vision to create a self-sustaining ecosystem.

Self-Sustainability

Our organic farm supports the retreat with fresh produce while creating a sustainable source of food and income for long-term community projects.
